The New Mandates for the Modern Marketer: Mastering the Adaptive Customer Engagement

We have all heard a lot about Marketing’s opportunity to be an organizational change agent – to be the voice and champion of the customer and leader of business growth. That is a tall order for over-taxed marketing teams who are on-boarding new engagement technologies, staying abreast of all new automation solutions, all while innovating at the speed of our customers’ engagements. Today’s modern marketer has a new list of requirements. We will require organization-wide alignment around the customer experience strategy, with each function and each employee understanding and upholding their role in delivering an optimized customer experience. We will also require a new view into the customer: one that goes beyond the aggregation of marketing or even transactional data, but one that incorporates all points of insight and intelligence, including tapping into data repositories from across the organization as well as from external, unstructured and even third party resources, to understand the future needs and desires of the customer.

We will hear from a peer, SAP’s Senior Director of Global CRM Marketing Robert Rothschild, who will share his own view on where and how mastering this requirement for the adaptive customer engagement has changed the fabric and fiber of SAP’s own marketing machine – and how best practices from leading edge brands from around the world have helped mold new marketing strategies.

The New Mandates from the Modern Empowered Customer: Making the Transition from Push to Pull

There is a new customer – and a new currency – that marketers must understand to be successful in this new digital world. It is a new way of thinking about our changing world – to engage people who are connected and empowered by digital technologies. A new relationship is emerging among individuals and organizations, as audiences become communities and consumers become co-creators. Marketers are looking for new ways to engage customers and organize their teams. While many talk about "pull" marketing, few have actually studied what it takes to create a true force of attraction that sustains an ongoing relationship with customers, employees and partners.

We will hear from Mark Bonchek, Chief Catalyst at thinkORBIT. Mark has been a pioneer and guide to the digital revolution since receiving Harvard University's first doctorate on the topic of social media in 1997. He has launched new businesses, created award-winning programs, and advised global leaders for such organizations as McKinsey & Company, The Economist, and the American Heart Association. He is a regular columnist for Harvard Business Review and founder of the SHIFT Academy to update leaders' thinking in a digital age. He is also a great friend to the CMO Council and will challenge us to think differently about the experiences we create with our customers, the leadership we provide to our organizations, and the maps that can guide us through the ever-shifting landscape of business.
